Hey Presto!

190807

Ok, so that didn’t go anywhere as bad as I thought it might.

So, everything is different isn’t it. New colours, new layout, new plugins, pretty much everything is new in some way. I was expecting bad things to happen when I changed over to this new theme, but quite amazingly most of it seems ok.

There are still several things that I haven’t quite finished, or will need to tweak now that the theme is live, but thats the fun part. I’m just glad that after about 4 months I can finally show this to the world.

I won’t go into detail about some of the changes and improvements I’ve made, I’ll save that for a bit later, for now I’ll leave it to you to look through the posts and pages and see for yourself.

Now I want to know what you all think, what you like, what you don’t (hopefully not too much in this column). I’m open to suggestions, so suggest away, keep in mind though that I’m now in “live redesign” mode, so things will keep changing around for a little while longer, but then again a good design is never finished…is it?

  2. Dean I love most of the new layout. The only thing that I’m not feeling is the HUGE red bar with your page titles. It just doesn’t seem to fit quite right with the rest of the page.

I love the subtle colors and shapes throughout the rest of the design though!

Actually that’s quite fortunate cause I have a sweet macbook pro… thinking about picking up one of those new imacs too…

Thanks I’ll have to check those programs out.

  6. @Dean: TextMate is great. And there’s a better solution than to get a similar app for Windows.

    It’s http://www.apple.com/getamac/ ;-)

  7. How do you develop/code the theme for your site? Straight code or do you use an application to help out?

This something I plan on covering in more detail sometime in the future, but since you asked, all the coding for my redesign was done in TextMate (http://www.macromates.com/), unfortunately its only for Mac, but do a google search there are a couple of very similar apps for Windows.

Just about all of the CSS was written in CSSEdit (http://www.macrabbit.com/cssedit/), even though I don’t make the most of a lot of the features its easily the best at what it does.

There may be a post somewhere on your site that answers this, but I’m interested in how you develop your themes.

    Nice work!

  9. Any idea when it will be available?

17 comments, I honestly thought someone would ask before then…

But the answer is that no one will be getting their hands on this new theme, at least not for a while. The original reason behind the redesign was to build myself a unique look and feel.

Sorry to disappoint. That said there is always the possibility that I will do a public version of this sometime in the future, but I can’t give you any timeframe for when.

  10. Love the new theme and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I really like how it moves a bit away from the traditional linear and vertical treatments and seems to use the space better.

  13. Dude, pipe dream is awesome! I especially like the tear effect on the bar at the bottom, and the curvey bottom on those box thingies. Good stuff…

  18. Thanks again Arpit. Home link is now fixed.

  19. looks better. :) your home page link is kind of broken. try going to some other page and then click the home page link. I think you hard coded index.php into that link

  20. Thank Arpit.

    1. Yeah I know, I kind of just stuck them there until I work out where I’m going to put them.

    2. Well it was supposed to be subtle, but I guess if its unreadable maybe thats a little too subtle, I’ve made the text darker now, should dbe easier to read.

  21. looks sweet. Just a few things I noticed

    1. on your homepage the dotted underlines look out of place on images for text-link-ads, feedreader count etc

    2. I can barely read the quote or text on the red header.

  22. Perfect, as expected.

  23. Yeah, the tabs are gone.

I’m using Safari (not the new beta, but the “old” one).

    Julian Schrader Quote
  24. Thanks Julian, I think the “pre-filled tabs” should be gone now.

Which browser are you using? The fields should have the field name in the background…I’ll see if I can find a work around for browsers that can/won’t put background images in form fields.

    dean.j.robinson Quote
  25. …but I managed to fill in the right information into the right fields.

Nice new design/layout! But why does this form feel so strange? The first three lines should have hints on what kind of information is expected, and why is the text-area pre-filled with a lot of tabs?

    Julian Schrader Quote
  26. First! Sorry, I had to do this after reading your tweet.

This comment form seems kind of odd to me.
