Fluency 2.3.2 — bug fixes and translations

Ok, it has taken a couple of weeks and about a dozen different WP installations, but I finally managed to replicate the mysterious “disappearing ‘hide menu’ button” bug that so many of you were reporting — so hopefully this update should resolve that issue (it resolved the occurrence that I produced). Also included are the first batch of translations (Italian, Turkish, Spanish and Chinese). As always, grab the update from here or use the built-in auto-updater.

Fluency 2.3.1 update now available

This minor update should hopefully fix the two common issues people were experiencing with the initial release of 2.3 — the menu overlap problem on the ‘Menu’ management page, and the lack of two-column hover menus. There are a couple of other small tweaks in there too, plus a new ‘coffee’ colour scheme. Grab the update from here or just use the auto-updater that’s built into WordPress.

More Nextga.me updates

Finished up the latest round of additions to nextga.me last night, newly added sporting fixtures include the 2010 NFL preseason and regular season, the 2010 FIFA world Cup and the 2010/2011 A-League. You can read more about the other improvements here.

I also really need to get around to writing a full post introducing nextga.me, but for those of you that don’t already know its a central sporting fixtures site that I’ve set up, with game times converted to your local timezone and its currently tracking almost 9,000 games covering 370+ teams from across the globe, with more being added all the time.

DVDs and piracy

I just want to watch my Sherlock Holmes DVD, but instead I’ve had to sit through 8 minutes (and counting) of movie trailers (that I don’t seem to be able to skip), and a stupid message about the piracy of Australian films hurting the future of the Australian film industry. Seriously? No one pirates Australian movies, they pirate movies people actually want to see. Is it any wonder people pirate things when they get forced to sit through crappy messages and crappier trailers even after paying for the DVD (although I didn’t actually pay for this DVD, it was a birthday present). Oh look, the DVD is finished being an ass and is ready for me to watch it now. How generous of it.

George Lucas’ letter to Lost producers

Congratulations on pulling off an amazing show. Don’t tell anyone … but when ‘Star Wars’ first came out, I didn’t know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you’ve planned the whole thing out in advance. Throw in some father issues and references to other stories — let’s call them homages — and you’ve got a series.

In six seasons, you’ve managed to span both time and space, and I don’t think I’m alone in saying that I never saw what was around the corner. Now that it’s all coming to an end, it’s impressive to see how much was planned out in advance and how neatly you’ve wrapped up everything. You’ve created something really special. I’m sad that the series is ending, but I look forward to seeing what you two are going to do next.

So, Multitasking.

You’ve all moaned and complained about it for the past couple of years and now you’re finally going to get it, but, is it really that much different to what we already have? (Note: I specifically referring to the way you can switch between apps, not the other features like background sounds/alerts/notifications etc).

Right now, if you’re in “App A” and you want to ‘switch’ to “App B”, all you do is tap the ‘home’ button and then tap the icon for “App B” on you homescreen. In OS 4.0 you’re in “App A”, and you double-tap the ‘home’ button and then tap the icon for “App B” in the switcher thingo (provided it was already running). Isn’t that pretty much the same thing, except now its complicated with the double-tap?

Yes, I’m aware that this new method should be more seemless as apps will retain their current ‘state’ as you switch amongst them. But shouldn’t good apps already have been written to work like this in the first place, whether you were switching to the app or relaunching it completely?

Maybe I’m missing the point, doesn’t really matter though because OS 4.0 on the whole looks pretty awesome, now we just have to wait for the new iPhone itself to be revealed. I’ll take one that has an aluminium back like the iPad, and loses the chrome rim that all iPhones have had thus far, thanks.

Why I enjoy Fringe

Its not just the weird pseudo-science or the occasional strange creature, resulting from Walter’s past endeavors, that they uncover, I’m really enjoying the alternate universe stuff. Without giving too much away (minor spoiler alert) last night’s episode showed that the writer’s are basing bits of the alternate world on a reality that really could have been, not just on made up dreams. They showed us a world where the Empire State Building actually was being used an airship docking station, and where Back to the Future starred Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly. For those of you who didn’t know Eric Stoltz was actually cast as McFly, and they spent four weeks filming with him before they realised it wasn’t working and decided to start again with Michael J Fox (who was originally their first choice, but unavailable to due to scheduling conflicts). Its the clever tid-bits like that that they throw in that make it fun to watch. Sure, not everyone is going to pick up on them, but that is what makes it interesting.

Flash is good for one thing, and one thing only

I could write 2,000 words about why I hate Flash, why its bad, why people should stop using it etc, but instead I’ll tell you what its good for. It’s good for things like Shut up woman get on my horse, and the occasional video player. That’s all. And once Firefox allow for a format other than ‘ogg’ to be used for HTML5 video then Flash video can go off and die as well.

Yes I’m ignoring Microsoft, they probably can’t even spell HTML5 (or progress), think about it, they obviously didn’t like Flash so they made Silverlight which as far as I can tell is the same if not worse than Flash (not that I can say that with any experience because I refuse to install the SIlverlight plugin)

Predictions for this week’s Apple event

It’s widely believed that we will finally see an Apple tablet of some description revealed later this week, since plenty of other people have already covered in a fair amount of detail the speculation around the technical specs of such a device, I’m going to keep this simple.

What might the event reveal? Some (unlikely) possibilities

  • The ‘tablet’ will be just like all the fan-made mockups we’ve seen in the past couple of years.
  • The ‘tablet’ will be completely different to everything people have dreamed up over the past couple of years — remember how wrong all those iPhone mockups were prior to the reveal of the original iPhone
  • The ‘tablet’ probably won’t be available with a docking LED display or add-on keyboard as Tim Van Damme hopes but it sure would be awesome if it did.
  • The ‘tablet’ will run the iPhoneOS just on a bigger screen (unlikely)
  • The ‘tablet’ will run full OS X, or an optimised version for the ‘lesser’ hardware
  • The ‘tablet’ will run a “new” OS which will still have OS X as the base, but with a new (awesome) UI
  • The next gen iPhone hardware will be previewed (unlikely)
  • The iPhone 4.0 software will be previewed (maybe)
  • The MacBook Pro line will get an update with new Core i5/i7 processors etc
  • An LED cinema display in a size other than 24-inch
  • Or… we’ll all be disappointed when there is no ‘tablet’ announcement, no iPhone 4.0 announcement, no MBP update — instead Apple announce that they’re moving more into the software side of things and that their first product will be a direct competitor for Photoshop.
