Want Help? Come get some!

I’ve grown tired of doing support via blog comments or emails, so it’s time for a change. Introducing HELP! my new BuddyPress powered support site. You can now get support for all my WordPress plugins and themes, plus Hahlo, nextga.me (once its finished.…) and other projects all in one spot.

Want Help? Come get some!

In the past I’ve had trouble finding a “good” solution for support. I’ve tried various forum packages, with each being abandoned because they were either insufficient or superfluous to my needs… that and every forum I’ve run has been hit by low-life spammers selling v1agr4 or offering to transfer $99,000,000,000 to me from their Nigerian bank account.

Following these ‘failures’ I tried hosted solutions like GetSatisfaction and UserVoice, again they didn’t really meet my needs, and I found that I was still left fielding support questions in blog comments and via email. In the case of support for Hahlo I stuck pretty strongly to GetSatisfaction (even if I didn’t check it as often as I probably should have). Recently GetSatisfaction have announced changes to their pricing plans, which ultimately means the free account (which I’ve been using) would appear that its losing a bunch of the more useful features. I should clarify that this change isn’t the only reason I’m moving away from GetSatisfaction, the main reason is that I wanted something I had more control over, and that I could also use for supporting my WordPress Plugins and Themes etc.

Minimal posting of late, sorry ’bout that.

I was sick all of last week, and have spent all my free time so far this week working on finishing Hahlo4 for it’s September 9 release. But I would like to share a couple of redesigns that went live in the last week. Matt Brett launched the latest incarnation of his blog/portfolio, similar dark brown/chocolate colour scheme as previous designs, but with a rejigged layout — very nice, as usual. And Tim Van Damme launched the redesign of his blog, Maxvoltar, lots of nice things in this one including the use of @font-face, the jQuery ‘masonry’ plugin for the positioning on the notes on the homepage, and on individual entries theres a magic static sidebar that appears from underneath the header as you scroll down. Very cool.

Hahlo blog is live Needed somewhere where I could both centralise my Hahlo info, and post updates longer than 140 characters. Solution (another) WordPress blog and half a day to build a theme.

And then it was redesigned

Surely I’m not the only one with this ‘problem’, I can’t sit on one design for too long, personally I think I’ve done well to hold out for nearly 7 months this time. If you’re reading this in your favourite feedreader, then you’re missing out on the interesting bit, you can’t see my *awesome* redesign unless you’re reading this in a browser, so, hop to it.

Wait

Isn’t it only like 6 weeks since you last redesigned? No, the last redesign went live the week after Christmas last year, which means its over 6 months since I’ve redesigned. So there :P

Why

I’ve gotten into a habit of redesigning (or at least refreshing) around the time that I upgrade to the latest and great version of WordPress. This time around I knew 2.8 was just around the corner and planned to go live with redesign while I was upgrading. That didn’t happen.

I also needed to do something to escape/take my mind off/avoid certain other things, and a redesign is great for that. Only problem that brought was that I didn’t have as much time to dedicate to the redesign as I normally would.

The One Week Redesign

Like most of the “redesigns” that I’ve done this year, this one is again just an evolution of the previous design. And like the last evolution this too was just about a complete ground-up rebuild. I’ve tried a few different things this time, with the use of post summaries, more variation in typography, revised single post view and many other bits and pieces. Lets say its same same but different…

Why another redesign?

Two reasons really, firstly I can’t help myself, I just always have this need to change something. Secondly, I needed to upgrade to WordPress 2.7 and I wanted to make sure I could make use of all the new features it brings, this meant I either had to update large portions of my existing theme, or build a new one. Oh, and did I mention that I only started work on this design on December 23rd, so really its the “less than one week” redesign.

What’s different?

The basics of the site haven’t changed very much at all, I’ve just rearranged things a bit, and gone crazy with some fancy CSS in areas like the post excerpts (CSS dropcaps FTW). The layouts of the reviews, archives and downloads pages remain largely untouched (because I was actually happy with how they looked). The single post view has received a bit of a revamp, with the excerpt added, a revised sidebar and updated comments display that makes use of the threaded comments functionality built in to WP2.7.

Sunrise, sunset

Sunrise, sunset

Although this theme may have been re-written from the ground up leaving few remnants of the “zipper” theme that I’ve been running for the last 7 months (its had a few touch-ups during that time), I’m not thinking of this as a complete redesign, its more of a refinement or evolution with some tricks thrown in. And hopefully its going to be a bit quicker too, since I’ve spent a fair amount of time cleaning things up to try and reduce load times.

Keep reading to find out how and why I made some of the bigger changes, as well as a few things that I still haven’t completely finished. I might even let you know about some other things I’m working on

Upgrades and design tweaks

On and off for the past week I’ve been re-working my current design. I was completely happy with just about all of it, but there were a few things (like adding my twitter status back in) that I just hadn’t gotten around to doing. I also monitor the response times for my site, and noticed that they had blown out since going to the new design, so I wanted to make some changes to try and counteract that.

With the release of WordPress 2.5-RC1 earlier this week I figured that the long weekend over Easter would be a good time to upgrade WP, and launch my revised design. So thats exactly what I’ve spent most of the afternoon doing. Most of that time was waiting for the full backup of my blog and forum to download, after that it was all fairly quick.

WordPress 2.5-RC1 and Fluency Admin

Its been a while in the making, mainly because they skipped 2.4, but WP2.5 finally landed earlier this week even if it was just the release candidate. By far the most obivous change to the average user is the overhauled admin interface. It is a huge improvement over previous versions, and overall I don’t mind it…but.

But, after using Steve Smith’s Tiger Admin plugin for the past year and a bit I had become very used to, among other things, having my menus down the left side. I tested Tiger admin with an earlier build of WP2.5, and it was pretty clear that the two weren’t going to play nice together. Which is exactly why I put together Fluency.

And now that I’m actively using WP2.5 with Fluency I’m more likely to pick up on any little bits and pieces that I’ve either missed completely, or those bits that have changed since I released version 1 (such as the menu in the add media HUD.) If you spot anything submit a bug and I’ll check it out. There will be an updated version once WP2.5-final is out.

The redesign thats not a redesign

I see it as more of an evolution of the design. Yes at first glance it looks quite different, but in reality not much has changed. I’ve dropped the rather large and bright orange ‘grunge’ style header graphic in place of a simpler, calmer header. Overall the design is even more white and clean that before, I’ve increased padding and margins around some items to add some more clean space.

One of the most obvious changes is the shift of the sidebar from the left to the right, and at the same time the whole page is centered in the window as opposed to being left aligned. There were couple of reason for switching the sidebar across to the right, mainly due to the load order of the page. For example if flickr is down (rare, but its is occassionally quite slow) the pages ‘hangs’ while it tries to load the widget. Now, the content is always loaded before the sidebar so, at worst, you can still read the content.

One of the less noticeable changes is that there is a little more variance in the colours I’ve used. Most of the link, or hover, colours remain orange as before, but I’ve made some green (to match the new logo), and in some sections I’ve coloured them to match which section they are in. Take for example the flickr images in the sidebar. Hover over them and you’ll see the first three have blue outlines, the fourth has a pink outline. Just a small thing to make it match the familiar flickr logo.

I’ve also added a new plugin called wp-typogrify which as the name implies helps with the typography of blog entries and titles. The changes is make are only small, but are visually pleasing.

Further optimisations

For some reason (ok, I know it one of the plugins I use) both prototpye and jquery are being loaded. Great. But I’m not using them. I’m sure there is no GOOD reason that I should need to load 150kb+ of javascript when the same things could be achieved much more efficiently…I’m having trouble even identifying what some plugins are using these libraries for. I’m going to seriously look at removing the dependency on these libraries form the plugins, or at least finding a much more compact alternative.
