Why I enjoy Fringe

Its not just the weird pseudo-science or the occasional strange creature, resulting from Walter’s past endeavors, that they uncover, I’m really enjoying the alternate universe stuff. Without giving too much away (minor spoiler alert) last night’s episode showed that the writer’s are basing bits of the alternate world on a reality that really could have been, not just on made up dreams. They showed us a world where the Empire State Building actually was being used an airship docking station, and where Back to the Future starred Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly. For those of you who didn’t know Eric Stoltz was actually cast as McFly, and they spent four weeks filming with him before they realised it wasn’t working and decided to start again with Michael J Fox (who was originally their first choice, but unavailable to due to scheduling conflicts). Its the clever tid-bits like that that they throw in that make it fun to watch. Sure, not everyone is going to pick up on them, but that is what makes it interesting.

Why 2010 needs to be a big year for TV

I love TV, who doesn’t? But while the last 4 or 5 years have been quite generous in providing me with a plethora of entertainment the pickings for the next couple of years could be significantly slimmer. Read on for a look at what favourites are dead and buried, which ones will be back next year and what new shows sit on the horizon.

We’re currently stuck in the awful period between the end of one TV season and the beginning of the next. There is almost nothing worth watching, and won’t be until about October when the 2010 TV season kicks into gear. On top of that 2010 needs to spawn a few decent new shows to fill the gaps that have been/will be left by the number of shows ending this year or next. Without which we’re facing the possibility of a very unentertaining 2011.

The past year has seen the end of numerous shows, either because they wound things up, were dropped by their network or a combination of the two. A couple of promising newbies also showed up, and a few old favourites (and less favourites) continued on. The question for some of those is how long do they have left.

Fringe Trailer

New TV show written/produced by J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Those three have already worked together on Alias, Star Trek, Mission Impossible 3 among other things. Kurtzman and Orci also worked together on Transformers and The Island.

The trailer looks pretty interesting, but I think I’ll watch this simply based on whose writing and producing it.

You can also check out a higher quality version here (as well as the new bet YouTube player): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAu4L5_Fl84

Update: Found some neat promo posters for Fringe over on a FOX blog (which is just using the default WordPress theme…very unimaginative guys…) Check them out
